Dentures/Partials FAQs

How long will it take to get used my denture/partial?

Ease in adapting to new teeth varies from person to person. Those who choose to undergo full extractions and have dentures placed immediately should leave the dentures in until the post-operative appointment. Especially during healing, the dentures should be left in the mouth most of the time, because they help through the healing process and give support to the oral tissues.

Any type of denture that you choose, whether it be an immediate denture or a complete denture does require removal upon retiring every evening. Remember that, if the appliance is removed, it must not be allowed to dry out, as this causes the material to shrink or distort! Always soak the removable teeth until returning them to your mouth.

How do I care for my new teeth?

In addition, routine denture checks by dental professionals should occur. Just because you have a complete denture does not mean that you should not see a dentist nor a hygienist. At your appointment, your denture fit would be checked and x-rays would be taken to insure the health of your tissue and bone.

To clean your dentures, you should use a toothbrush specially designed for dentures and a denture cleanser. Regular toothpaste should NOT be used, because it may be too abrasive for dentures. After removing and cleaning the denture, rinse it and submerge in a denture-cleaning solution.

From time to time, you will need to return to our office for repairs and adjustments as they become necessary. Please feel free to call and speak with our patient coordinators to get an appointment with your dentist who will assess what repairs and/or adjustments are needed.

How do I care for my new partial?

If you wear a partial, make certain when you floss and brush your natural teeth that you take special care to clean the area around the clasps, as trapped food particles, combined with salivary acids and bacteria, may cause these abutment teeth to be more susceptible to decay.

Routine appointments are imperative when wearing a partial. At your appointments, your hygienist and dentist will check to see that not only your tissue and bone are healthy, but also the permanent teeth around the partial are still being well-maintained.
